Description
Running along the midline in the attached superior border of the falx cerebri, the superior sagittal sinus forms a triangular dural venous channel deep to the sagittal suture. Cortical (superficial) cerebral veins approach it from both cerebral hemispheres, crossing the subdural space to enter the sinus along its lateral walls, while arachnoid granulations project into its lumen. Superiorly the sinus relates to the calvaria, and inferiorly it lies above the cingulate gyrus and interhemispheric fissure. It is midline. That relationship to the falx and midline cranial vault makes this sinus a frequent teaching anchor for dural venous sinus anatomy and for the distinction between epidural, subdural, and subarachnoid spaces. Parasagittal meningiomas arise from the falx or adjacent dura and can narrow or occlude the superior sagittal sinus, complicating resection and driving preoperative MR venography planning. Traumatic injury at the vertex can also tear bridging veins entering the sinus, producing subdural hematoma that tracks along the convexity rather than pooling in cisterns. A clean sagittal orientation clarifies why venous drainage and CSF resorption meet here. Use this illustration in gross anatomy and neuroanatomy teaching modules to pair the dural reflections with venous outflow pathways, and in neurosurgical or neuroradiology publications discussing parasagittal lesions, venous sinus thrombosis, or craniotomy planning near the midline.
