Description

Curving in an S-shaped course along the posterolateral cranial fossa, the sigmoid sinus is shown as a blue venous channel continuing from the transverse sinus toward the jugular foramen, where it becomes the internal jugular vein. Adjacent dural venous pathways are logically visible at the confluence, including the transverse sinus and the superior petrosal sinus as it approaches the petrous part of the temporal bone. Superficial cerebral landmarks such as gyri and sulci provide orientation around the posterior cerebral hemispheres, while the brainstem and rostral cervical spinal cord lie inferiorly in the midline. Clinically, this segment matters because it is the dominant outflow tract for intracranial venous drainage and sits immediately posterior to the mastoid air cells, making it vulnerable in otogenic infections and in mastoid surgery. Sigmoid sinus thrombosis and septic thrombophlebitis can complicate otitis media or mastoiditis, and the nearby jugular bulb anatomy influences endovascular access, jugular foramen syndromes, and surgical corridors to lesions of the posterior fossa.
