Description
Viewed from the lateral side through a sagittal (hemisection) cut, the dura-lined venous pathway is traced from the confluence region toward the posterior cranial fossa, where the transverse sinus turns inferiorly into the sigmoid sinus with its characteristic S-shaped course. The sigmoid sinus lies posterolateral to the cerebellum and posterior to the petrous part of the temporal bone, then descends toward the jugular foramen to continue as the internal jugular vein. Adjacent midline landmarks in this section typically include the occipital pole, tentorium cerebelli, brainstem (midbrain, pons, medulla), and proximal spinal cord, with cranial nerves emerging from the brainstem and passing anteriorly toward their foramina. Color coding distinguishes venous channels (blue) from arteries (red) and cranial nerves (yellow). A clean venous turn. That lateral, sagittal perspective matters because the sigmoid sinus is a fixed dural sinus that defines the surgical corridor to the cerebellopontine angle and mastoid region, and its relationship to the jugular foramen becomes a practical constraint in retrosigmoid and transmastoid approaches. Thrombosis of the transverse or sigmoid sinus can present with headache, papilledema, or posterior fossa venous infarction, and venous dominance or hypoplasia on one side changes both imaging interpretation and operative risk. For teaching, the S-curve makes it easy to connect the confluence of sinuses to jugular outflow and to relate posterior fossa venous drainage to the tentorium. Neuroanatomy and head and neck anatomy courses use this view to anchor dural venous sinus pathways, cranial base foramina, and the proximity of lower cranial nerves to major venous structures. It also suits atlases and surgical manuals discussing sigmoid sinus exposure, jugular foramen lesions, and venous sinus thrombosis on CT venography or MR venography.
