Description
Frontal full-body anatomy places the paired kidneys retroperitoneally on either side of the vertebral column, with the right kidney positioned slightly inferior to the left, and the suprarenal (adrenal) glands capping each superior pole. From each renal hilum, the ureters descend inferiorly along the posterior abdominal wall, then course into the pelvis to enter the urinary bladder at its posterolateral angles. The bladder sits midline in the lesser pelvis behind the pubic symphysis, continuing inferiorly as the urethra. Portions of small and large intestine appear anterior to these retroperitoneal structures. That anterior overlay is useful because it keeps the urinary tract in continuous view from kidney to urethra while preserving key depth cues, retroperitoneum versus peritoneal cavity and pelvic organ position. Clinical teaching often hinges on these relationships: ureteral calculi commonly lodge at the ureteropelvic junction, at the pelvic brim where the ureter crosses the iliac vessels, and at the ureterovesical junction, with pain that can radiate from flank to groin as the stone migrates. Age-related lower urinary tract symptoms in men also become easier to frame when the bladder outlet and urethral course are seen in context, even when the prostate is not explicitly emphasized.
