Description
Posterior standing orientation places the esophagus in the midline as it descends through the neck and posterior mediastinum to the stomach, which sits in the left upper quadrant beneath the left hemidiaphragm. Right of midline, the liver occupies the right upper quadrant with the gallbladder tucked on its visceral (inferior) surface, while the pancreas lies more posteriorly, spanning transversely behind the stomach toward the splenic hilum. Centrally, jejunal and ileal loops fill the peritoneal cavity, and the large intestine frames them, with the ascending colon on the right, transverse colon superiorly, descending colon on the left, and sigmoid colon leading to the rectum and anal canal in the midline pelvis. Key relationships read cleanly from the back. A posterior overlay is useful when teaching how the gastrointestinal tract relates to retroperitoneal planes and posterior abdominal wall landmarks, where students often lose the spatial logic.
