Rendered from a posterior perspective in an adult male, the abdominal viscera are arranged against the posterior abdominal wall with the pancreas emphasized in its retroperitoneal position. Superiorly, the liver occupies the right upper quadrant, with the gallbladder on its visceral (inferior) surface, while the stomach sits more superior and left, leading into the duodenum that curves around the pancreatic head. Central loops of jejunum and ileum fill the mid-abdomen, and the colon frames them peripherally, ascending on the subject’s right, crossing as the transverse colon, and descending on the left into the sigmoid colon and rectum, terminating at the anal canal. Posterior anatomy clarifies what is fixed versus mobile in the gastrointestinal tract, and that distinction matters in practice.
