Description
Anterior full-body orientation places the gastrointestinal tract within the torso of an adult Asian male, with the esophagus descending in the midline through the neck and thorax to enter the stomach in the left upper quadrant. The liver occupies the right upper quadrant, lying superior to the transverse colon and extending medially toward the epigastrium, partially overlapping the stomach from an anterior vantage. Coils of small intestine fill the central and inferior abdomen, while the large intestine frames them peripherally with an ascending colon on the subject’s right, a transverse segment crossing superiorly, and a descending colon on the subject’s left continuing toward the rectum in the midline pelvis. This front-facing layout is the one most clinicians and trainees use to map symptoms and physical exam findings to organ position, from epigastric pain radiating to the back in pancreatobiliary disease to right upper quadrant tenderness in acute cholecystitis.
