Gluteus Minimus Muscle

Description

Positioned on the left lateral hip, the gluteus minimus appears as a small, triangular muscle arising from the external (gluteal) surface of the ilium, inferior and anterior to gluteus medius and deep to it. Its fibers converge inferiorly to a tendon that passes lateral to the hip joint capsule and inserts on the anterior facet of the greater trochanter of the femur. Nearby you would expect to see the iliac crest superiorly, the acetabular rim medially, and the proximal vastus lateralis and tensor fasciae latae anterolaterally. The femoral head and neck provide bony context immediately medial to the tendon’s course. Functionally, this is the hip abductor you forget until it fails. Gluteus minimus, with gluteus medius, stabilizes the pelvis in single leg stance, and its anterior fibers contribute to hip internal rotation, a key teaching point when differentiating gait deviations and Trendelenburg sign. The tendon’s relationship to the anterosuperior greater trochanter also links it to greater trochanteric pain syndrome, where gluteus minimus tendinopathy or partial tears can mimic lateral hip bursitis and guide both ultrasound assessment and targeted injection planning.
