Description
Centered on the inferior eyelid, the inferior palpebral venous arcade is rendered as a fine plexiform network of venules coursing within the palpebral tissues along the lower lid margin. Tributaries track medially toward the medial canthus and laterally toward the lateral canthus, where they communicate with superficial facial veins overlying the zygomatic and maxillary regions. A semi-transparent skull provides fixed landmarks, including the orbital rim, maxilla, nasal bones, and mandible, helping orient the venous channels relative to the orbit and midface. Color coding distinguishes veins from adjacent arterial pathways, with smaller-caliber vessels drawn in lighter tones to emphasize the draining meshwork. Lower eyelid venous anatomy matters because the periorbital region sits at the junction of facial and orbital drainage, where valveless communications can permit retrograde spread of infection from the eyelid and nose into the orbit and cavernous sinus via the angular and ophthalmic venous pathways.
