Description
Centered on the lower eyelid, the inferior palpebral venous arcade courses within the tarsal region as a chain of small venules running parallel to the inferior eyelid margin. From an anterior perspective, the arcade sits superficial to the tarsal plate and deep to the eyelid skin, with tributaries draining medially toward the angular vein near the medial canthus and laterally toward the superficial temporal system. Surrounding it, the orbicularis oculi encircles the palpebral fissure, while adjacent facial veins and arteries track along the cheek and periorbital region. Small vessels dominate. Venous drainage of the eyelids matters because it bridges superficial facial veins and the ophthalmic venous pathways, a relationship that underpins the spread patterns of periorbital cellulitis and septic thrombophlebitis. Surgeons working through lower blepharoplasty or transconjunctival approaches also contend with these venules, where minor injury can produce conspicuous ecchymosis and postoperative edema, and the medial canthal drainage is a consistent landmark near the lacrimal sac region.
