Description
Visible on the anterior torso are the pectoralis major spanning from the sternum and medial clavicle toward the proximal humerus, with the deltoid partially entering laterally at the shoulder. Inferior to the pectoral region, the rectus abdominis columns and their tendinous intersections are framed by broad abdominal sheets, with the external oblique occupying the anterolateral abdominal wall and its fibers running inferomedially. Along the lateral thoracic wall, serratus anterior digitations interlock with the ribs and external oblique near the midaxillary line, while the sternocleidomastoid ascends superiorly from the manubrium and clavicle toward the mastoid process. Bony landmarks of the rib cage are emphasized beneath these layers. Fiber direction is the teaching point here, because it tells you which structures will tension with respiration and trunk motion and where fascial planes guide surgical dissection. The serratus anterior slips and their relationship to the ribs matter in scapular dyskinesis and long thoracic nerve palsy, where denervation produces medial scapular winging and loss of efficient upward rotation. An anterior chest and upper abdominal depiction like this also maps the common access corridor for thoracotomy or subpectoral approaches, where pectoralis major is elevated and the intercostal spaces and ribs become the next palpable landmarks.
