Seen in lateral profile, the arachnoid mater forms a thin, translucent membrane draped deep to the cranial dura mater and superficial to the pia mater that closely invests the gyri and sulci. Between arachnoid and pia, the subarachnoid space follows the convexity of the cerebral hemisphere and bridges over sulci, creating CSF-filled cistern-like expansions where arachnoid trabeculae span toward the pial surface. Superficial cerebral vessels course within the subarachnoid compartment, then traverse the arachnoid to reach the dural venous sinuses via bridging veins. Landmarks of the lateral cerebrum such as the frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital lobes are implied beneath the meningeal layers, with the brainstem emerging inferiorly. Lateral meningeal anatomy matters when you need to explain where blood or infection collects relative to dura and arachnoid. Subdural hematoma results from tearing of bridging veins in the potential space between dura and arachnoid, classically after acceleration-deceleration injury, while subarachnoid hemorrhage releases blood into the CSF-filled space around cortical vessels and can track widely over the convexity. A clean lateral perspective also supports teaching lumbar puncture logic by contrast, clarifying that CSF is sampled from the subarachnoid space, not the subdural compartment.
