Seen from above, the arachnoid mater spans the cerebral convexities as a thin, translucent meningeal layer bridging the gyri and sulci of the right and left cerebral hemispheres. Along the midline longitudinal fissure, it lies deep to the dural falx cerebri and adjacent to the superior sagittal sinus region, where arachnoid granulations project toward the sinus lumen. Deep to the arachnoid, the pia mater remains adherent to the cortical surface and follows the sulcal contours, defining the subarachnoid space where cortical veins course superiorly toward the midline. Superior orientation clarifies the medial to lateral relationships between parasagittal cortex, bridging veins, and the dural venous sinus corridor. That parasagittal corridor matters in daily practice. Bridging veins traverse the subdural space to drain into the superior sagittal sinus, and their vulnerability to shearing underlies the classic mechanism of subdural hematoma, while obstruction or thrombosis of the superior sagittal sinus alters venous outflow from the superior cerebral veins and can produce headache, papilledema, and venous infarction. Arachnoid granulations, clustered near the sinus and lateral lacunae, also provide a direct teaching link to cerebrospinal fluid resorption and how impaired outflow can contribute to communicating hydrocephalus. Clean midline anatomy. It anchors both physiology and pathology. Use this superior perspective in neuroanatomy and neurophysiology teaching when you need a clear meningeal map over the cerebral hemispheres, or in surgical education to orient trainees to parasagittal approaches where sinus preservation and bridging vein management drive operative planning.
