Description
Arising deep to the calvaria, the dura mater is opened to reveal the arachnoid mater spanning the cerebral hemispheres in a frontal (coronal) section seen from a dorsal (superior) perspective. The delicate arachnoid bridges across the sulci while the pia mater follows the cortical gyri and sulcal depths, defining the CSF-filled subarachnoid space between them. Midline relationships are readable, with the interhemispheric fissure separating right and left hemispheres and the falx cerebri expected just superior to the corpus callosum region, while superficial cortical vessels course within the subarachnoid compartment. For teaching meningeal anatomy, this cut clarifies a point that is often misunderstood: the arachnoid does not hug the cortex, it tents over it, and that geometric fact explains why subarachnoid hemorrhage spreads rapidly along cisterns and sulci instead of remaining localized. The dorsal coronal orientation also suits discussions of lumbar puncture and CSF dynamics by grounding where CSF normally resides relative to dura, arachnoid, and pia. Short, decisive anatomy.
