Description
Seen from an inferior (basal) perspective, the arachnoid mater drapes over the ventral surface of the cerebrum and brainstem, bridging across sulci while allowing the subarachnoid space to intervene between arachnoid and pia. Yellow cranial nerves emerge from the basal forebrain and brainstem and course anterolaterally and posterolaterally toward their foramina at the skull base, with the optic nerves and chiasm positioned anteriorly and the trigeminal nerves arising more laterally from the pons. Red arterial channels track within the subarachnoid space around the circle of Willis region and along the ventral brainstem, while blue venous pathways accompany them more variably as they head toward dural venous sinuses. Color coding keeps the relationships legible. For teaching meningeal anatomy, this basal view clarifies a point many learners miss: the arachnoid is a meninx that does not tightly follow cortical contours, so cisterns form where arachnoid spans between prominences, and that is exactly where major vessels and cranial nerves travel. Clinically, it supports understanding subarachnoid hemorrhage patterns from ruptured saccular aneurysms (often at the anterior communicating or posterior communicating artery), where blood tracks through basal cisterns and can produce cranial nerve palsies, classically an oculomotor nerve (CN III) palsy with a posterior communicating aneurysm. A tight correlation.
