Description
Oriented from an inferior perspective, the cranial dura mater is seen forming a continuous lining of the internal cranial base, with its dural reflections creating partitions between major encephalic compartments. The falx cerebri occupies the midline between the cerebral hemispheres, while the tentorium cerebelli spans transversely, separating the occipital lobes superiorly from the cerebellum inferiorly. Posteriorly, the falx cerebelli projects in the midline toward the foramen magnum. Venous channels track along these dural attachments. Because the view looks up at the cranial base, it clarifies where the dura is fixed to bone and where it forms free edges that define surgical corridors and potential sites of herniation. The tentorial notch frames the midbrain, and its relationship to the free edge of the tentorium explains classic patterns of transtentorial (uncal) herniation with ipsilateral oculomotor nerve (CN III) compression, early pupillary dilation, and posterior cerebral artery compromise. The same dural reflections also anchor the dural venous sinuses, so their positions matter in subdural hematoma spread and in approaches that risk tearing bridging veins. A key landmark. Neuroanatomy courses and dissection labs use this angle to teach meningeal layers (dura, arachnoid, pia) alongside the dural folds that compartmentalize the cerebrum and cerebellum, and to orient trainees before opening the posterior fossa.
