Description
Inferiorly oriented, the visceral surface of the male kidney is rendered semi-transparent to expose the renal arterial tree as it enters at the hilum and fans through the parenchyma. The main renal artery approaches medially, then divides into segmental branches that pass anterior to the renal pelvis and major calyces before continuing as interlobar arteries in the renal columns between adjacent pyramids. Arcuate arteries sweep along the corticomedullary junction, giving rise to cortical radiate (interlobular) arteries that run superiorly toward the capsule. Clean vascular geometry. This inferior perspective aligns with how the renal hilum is encountered in several operative and endovascular contexts, where the takeoff angle and early branching pattern can determine access and clamp strategy. Segmental renal arteries are functional end arteries, so an accessory or early-branching vessel has direct implications for partial nephrectomy planning, renal transplantation, and management of iatrogenic hemorrhage after percutaneous nephrolithotomy. The semi-transparent treatment also helps teach why occlusion at different levels produces wedge-shaped infarcts with predictable cortical involvement. Use this asset in gross anatomy and urogenital blocks to correlate hilum anatomy with intrarenal perfusion, or in surgical education materials covering hilar dissection, segmental ischemia, and nephron-sparing techniques. It also fits nephrology and radiology publications discussing renal artery stenosis, accessory renal arteries, and infarction patterns on CT angiography. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
