Description
Arising from the mandibular division (V3) of the trigeminal nerve, the auriculotemporal nerve is traced in lateral profile as it courses posterior to the temporomandibular joint and winds around the neck of the mandible toward the parotid region and external ear. Superiorly it ascends with the superficial temporal vessels in the temporal scalp, while small articular and cutaneous branches track anterior to the auricle and over the temporal fascia. Deep to the skin, the masseter sits anterior to the mandibular ramus, the temporalis fans superiorly, and the sternocleidomastoid anchors the posteroinferior neck. Clear relationships. This lateral angle matters because the auriculotemporal nerve is a common pain generator and a frequent bystander in procedures around the TMJ, parotid gland, and temporal artery. Clinicians use this anatomy when differentiating auriculotemporal neuralgia from TMJ dysfunction and when explaining referred otalgia from mandibular pathology. It also frames Frey syndrome, where aberrant parasympathetic fibers (hitchhiking via the auriculotemporal nerve after parotidectomy) lead to gustatory sweating over the temporal and preauricular skin. Use it in head and neck anatomy teaching to anchor V3 sensory territories, to contrast trigeminal branches with the nearby facial nerve motor branches within the parotid, and to orient learners to the preauricular corridor used for TMJ arthrocentesis and parotid approaches. It also fits operative notes, patient education handouts for TMJ-related pain patterns, and radiology-pathology correlation for preauricular masses and parotid disease.
