Description
C5 is presented in lateral view, with the vertebral body anterior and the vertebral arch posterior, framing the vertebral canal. Superior and inferior vertebral notches on the pedicle are clearly profiled, aligning with the corresponding notches of adjacent cervical vertebrae to create the intervertebral foramen. Posteriorly, the lamina leads into the base of the spinous process, while the superior and inferior articular processes rise and descend at the articular pillars (zygapophyseal region). Laterally, the transverse process is positioned anterolateral to the articular mass, with the transverse foramen expected within it in a true C5. Lateral profiling of C5 matters because it is one of the clearest ways to teach how bony boundaries contribute to radiculopathy: the intervertebral foramen is constrained superiorly and inferiorly by pedicles and posteriorly by the uncovertebral and facet regions, so foraminal stenosis from uncovertebral osteophytes or facet hypertrophy often compromises the exiting C5 nerve root. This is a key level in cervical spondylosis and in evaluation of whiplash-associated facet joint pain. Small details count. Use this asset in spine anatomy and neuroanatomy teaching to orient learners to cervical pedicles, foramina, and zygapophyseal joints, or in clinical publishing to support discussions of C4–C5 foraminal narrowing, anterior cervical discectomy and fusion level selection, and correlating lateral radiographs with CT anatomy.
