Description
Centered in an anterior perspective, the C3 vertebra is identified by its small, rectangular vertebral body and the paired uncinate processes forming the superolateral lips of the body at the uncovertebral joints. Lateral to the body, each transverse process projects outward and contains the foramen transversarium, bordered by anterior and posterior tubercles that frame the transverse costal elements typical of the mid cervical spine. Superiorly and inferiorly, the adjacent intervertebral discs appear as pale intervals separating C3 from C2 and C4, clarifying the segmental spacing in the cervical column. A midline spinous process lies posterior and is largely hidden from this anterior angle. Anterior views of C3 matter when you need to teach or plan around the course of the vertebral artery, which traverses the foramina transversaria from C6 to C1 and can be endangered by lateral dissection, pedicle instrumentation, or fractures extending into the transverse process. Uncovertebral osteophytes at C3 to C4 also contribute to cervical spondylosis, where bony overgrowth can narrow the intervertebral foramen and irritate the exiting C4 nerve root. Small bone, big consequences. Use this artwork in gross anatomy and orthopaedic teaching to distinguish a typical cervical vertebra from atlas and axis, and to orient learners to anterior landmarks before introducing CT, angiographic correlation, or operative approaches to the cervical spine.
