Description
Centered on the sixth cervical vertebra (C6) in anterior aspect, the vertebral body dominates the midline with its superior and inferior endplates forming the adjacent intervertebral boundaries. Lateral to the body, the transverse processes project to either side, each bearing an anterior tubercle that sits anterior to the transverse foramen, with the vertebral arch and spinous process positioned posteriorly and largely out of view from this perspective. The uncinate processes rise along the superolateral margins of the vertebral body, forming the uncovertebral joints with C5 superiorly. This is the level where the anterior tubercle becomes a clear landmark. The carotid tubercle. Clinically, the prominent anterior tubercle of C6 (Chassaignac’s tubercle) provides a palpable bony point used to compress the common carotid artery against the cervical spine and to orient anterior cervical procedures. An anterior view also clarifies how the transverse foramen lies lateral to the vertebral body, a relationship that matters when considering vertebral artery vulnerability in fracture patterns or during placement of anterior cervical instrumentation. Uncovertebral osteophytes at C5 to C6 commonly contribute to foraminal narrowing, so appreciating the uncinate margins from the front helps explain radicular symptoms that accompany cervical spondylosis at this level. Ideal for head and neck anatomy teaching, orthopedic and neurosurgical lectures on anterior cervical approaches, and atlas plates that need a clean depiction of C6 landmarks for palpation and procedural orientation.
