Description
C6 is presented in lateral profile within the lower cervical spine, with the vertebral body anterior and the spinous process projecting posteriorly at the junction of the laminae. The superior and inferior articular processes form the zygapophysial joints, sloping to guide flexion and extension while limiting axial rotation compared with the upper cervical segments. A short, robust transverse process extends laterally, and the transverse foramen sits within it, positioned anterior to the articular pillar. Pedicle and lamina frame the vertebral foramen posterior to the body. For surgical planning and cross sectional anatomy, C6 matters because it anchors common surface and radiographic landmarks in the neck, including the anterior tubercle of the transverse process (Chassaignac tubercle) used to compress the common carotid artery or orient an anterior cervical approach. Degenerative disease frequently concentrates at C5 to C6 and C6 to C7, where uncovertebral joints and posterior osteophytes can narrow the intervertebral foramen and contribute to C6 radiculopathy, classically affecting sensation over the lateral forearm and thumb with weakness in elbow flexion and wrist extension. Small structure, big consequences.
