Description
Centered on the anterior thorax and lower neck, the airway begins with the nasal cavities and paranasal sinuses, continues through the pharynx and larynx, then descends as the trachea in the midline. At the level of the carina, the trachea bifurcates into the right and left main bronchi, which course inferolaterally into their respective lungs and arborize into lobar and segmental bronchi, then bronchioles, visible through semi-transparent pulmonary parenchyma. Right and left lungs are shown in situ, with the left lung slightly reduced in transverse width to accommodate the cardiac silhouette medially. Branching dominates. An anterior overlay like this makes airway anatomy easy to teach because it keeps the branching pattern aligned with palpable surface landmarks, from the suprasternal notch down to the main bronchi and the hilum of each lung. Clinically, it supports discussions of aspiration and foreign body lodging, which more often tracks into the right main bronchus due to its wider caliber and more vertical course compared with the left. The view also maps naturally to bronchoscopy navigation and to the expected distribution of mucus plugging or bronchiectasis within segmental airways. Use this illustration in gross anatomy and respiratory physiology courses to orient students to conducting versus respiratory zones, and in nursing and respiratory therapy materials to explain inhaled medication delivery from trachea to bronchioles.
