Description
Anterior thoracic anatomy is rendered through a semi-transparent integument, revealing the lower respiratory tract from the upper airway down to the intrapulmonary bronchial tree. The trachea descends in the midline from the laryngeal inlet, bifurcating at the carina into the right and left main bronchi, which course inferolaterally into their respective hila and branch into lobar and segmental bronchi within the lung parenchyma. Superiorly, the nasal cavity and nasopharyngeal passage are partially opened to orient airflow, while the right lung sits slightly more superior than the left, with the left lung molded around the cardiac impression. A slight leftward turn of the figure gives mild obliquity, helping separate the proximal bronchi in depth. Clear landmarks. That proximal branching pattern matters when you teach ventilation distribution and aspiration risk: the right main bronchus is shorter, wider, and more vertical, so foreign bodies and aspirated gastric contents track preferentially into the right bronchial tree, often the lower lobe in a supine patient. The view also supports correlation with bronchoscopy, where the carina serves as a primary landmark and distortion or widening can signal mediastinal lymphadenopathy or mainstem bronchial obstruction. Segmental bronchopulmonary anatomy is the map for lobar collapse, post-obstructive pneumonia, and surgical planning for segmentectomy.
