Description
Seen in left lateral profile, the deep cervical artery ascends in the posterior cervical region, coursing superiorly deep to the semispinalis capitis and adjacent to the cervical vertebral column. Proximally it arises from the costocervical trunk of the subclavian artery and tracks posterior to the scalene musculature, while more anteriorly the common carotid artery and internal jugular vein run within the carotid sheath toward the angle of the mandible. Superficial cutaneous vessels of the face and scalp overlay the skin, providing orientation to deeper planes. A deep vessel, by design. This lateral arrangement matters when you need to distinguish posterior neck supply from the carotid system. The deep cervical artery contributes to muscular and spinal canal perfusion through anastomoses with the occipital artery and vertebral artery branches, a pattern that becomes relevant in posterior cervical approaches, cervical instrumentation, and after high-energy whiplash or penetrating trauma where deep bleeding may track beneath the semispinalis. For interventional planning, it also helps clarify why posterior cervical hematomas can expand without obvious anterior neck swelling. Use this artwork in gross anatomy and head and neck courses to teach layered relationships between the carotid sheath, posterior triangle contents, and deep paraspinal vasculature, or in surgical atlases discussing posterior cervical exposure and muscle-splitting approaches.
