Description
Presented in lateral profile, the adult female skeleton is rendered as an articulated osseous chain from cranium to feet, with the calvaria, facial skeleton, mandible, and cervical vertebrae aligned over the thoracic cage and pelvis. The vertebral column demonstrates the typical sagittal curvatures, cervical lordosis transitioning to thoracic kyphosis and then lumbar lordosis, terminating at the sacrum and coccyx posterior to the pelvic cavity. Anteriorly, the sternum and costal cartilages relate to the ribs, while the scapulae lie posterolateral to the rib cage and connect to the humeri; distally the radius and ulna frame the carpus and metacarpals, and the femora articulate with the acetabula before continuing to the tibiae, fibulae, and pedal phalanges. Joint congruence is easy to read. A true side view matters because it clarifies sagittal-plane alignment, the relationship of the head to the thorax, and the load path through the spine, pelvis, and lower limb during stance. This perspective supports teaching and clinical discussion of kyphosis, hyperlordosis, and spondylolisthesis, and it helps explain why anterior pelvic tilt shifts the lumbar curve and can increase facet joint loading.
