Description
Presented as a complete adult female osteological specimen, the skeleton includes the axial elements of the skull, vertebral column, ribs, and sternum, together with the appendicular girdles and upper limb. Superiorly, the cranium frames the orbits and nasal aperture while the mandible forms the inferior facial skeleton. Inferior to the thoracic cage, the vertebral column descends from cervical to thoracic and lumbar regions, with the sacrum articulating to the pelvic ring; laterally, the clavicles and scapulae anchor the glenohumeral joints, continuing distally through humerus, radius, and ulna to the carpus, metacarpus, and phalanges. Sex-specific morphology is often the teaching focus in a female skeleton, and the pelvis is the most informative region: a broader pelvic inlet, a wider subpubic angle, and more laterally flared iliac alae alter obstetric dimensions and change the biomechanics of load transfer from spine to lower limbs. Forensic and anthropological sex estimation relies on these landmarks, but they also matter clinically when planning pelvic surgery or interpreting pelvic radiographs after trauma.
