Description
Arcing across the dorsum of the right male foot, the dorsal metatarsal veins course in the intermetatarsal spaces superficial to the metatarsals and phalanges, collecting venules from the toes and converging proximally toward the dorsal venous arch. Distally, tributaries run alongside the digital veins near the metatarsophalangeal joints, while proximally the network lies over the tarsal region and aligns with the extensor tendons that form the visible dorsal surface anatomy. Blue vascular channels are presented against the bony landmarks of the metatarsal shafts and heads, with the hallux positioned medially and the lesser toes laterally. Orientation is clear. This dorsal perspective matters because the superficial veins of the foot are common access points and common sites of iatrogenic injury, and their relationship to the dorsal arch helps explain how blood returns into the great saphenous vein medially and the small saphenous vein laterally. Venous congestion and dorsal foot edema, seen with heart failure, venous insufficiency, or after lower-limb immobilization, often become apparent over this metatarsal venous network. For surgeons, the anatomy also frames safe planes for dorsal approaches to the metatarsals and tarsometatarsal joints, where veins can complicate dissection and contribute to postoperative hematoma.
