Description
Basal bronchopulmonary segments occupy the inferior portions of each lower lobe, forming most of the diaphragmatic surface of the lung. On the right, the superior segment lies posteriorly above the basal group, while the medial, anterior, lateral, and posterior basal segments wrap around the inferomedial to inferoposterior lung base in close relation to the dome of the diaphragm. On the left, basal segments are typically grouped as anteromedial, lateral, and posterior basal, arranged around the inferior lobe with their segmental bronchi and accompanying segmental pulmonary arteries running centrally, and intersegmental pulmonary veins tracking along the planes between segments. Inferior is the key orientation. Basal segment anatomy matters because it predicts where fluid, infection, and aspirated material will settle under gravity. In a supine patient, the posterior basal segment is a common site for aspiration pneumonia and dependent atelectasis, and the segmental boundaries guide bronchoscopy, postural drainage, and segmentectomy when localized disease spares the remainder of the lower lobe. For thoracic surgeons, the relationship of intersegmental veins to the resection plane is not academic, it defines a safe margin while preserving venous drainage of adjacent segments. Use this plate for teaching bronchopulmonary segment nomenclature in gross anatomy, radiologic anatomy, and respiratory therapy courses, or for annotating CT correlations of lower lobe consolidation along the diaphragmatic surface. It also fits thoracic surgery and pulmonology publications discussing basal segment resection, aspiration patterns, or gravity-dependent opacities on chest imaging.
