Description
Centered in the anterior neck, the male laryngeal framework is rendered with the thyroid cartilage forming a broad anterior shield, its superior border approaching the thyrohyoid membrane and the hyoid bone superiorly. Inferior to the thyroid cartilage, the cricoid cartilage completes a full ring, with the superior border of the cricoid defining the transition into the laryngeal cavity and the inferior border continuing into the first tracheal rings. Anterolaterally, the cricothyroid muscle spans from the anterolateral cricoid to the inferior margin and horn of the thyroid cartilage, while finer membranous bands suggest the cricothyroid ligament and adjacent laryngeal membranes. Tracheal cartilages descend inferiorly in stacked rings. Clinically, the relationship between the thyroid cartilage, cricoid cartilage, and cricothyroid membrane underpins both airway access and phonation mechanics: contraction of the cricothyroid muscle tilts the thyroid cartilage anteriorly on the cricoid, increasing vocal fold tension and raising pitch, a key teaching point in voice physiology. Airway procedures often target this same region, since cricothyrotomy is performed through the cricothyroid membrane immediately inferior to the thyroid cartilage and superior to the cricoid, while endotracheal tube cuff pressure is managed to reduce subglottic injury at the cricoid level.
