Description
Arising within the superficial fascia of the temporal region, the superficial temporal vein descends anterior to the auricle, superficial to the temporal fascia, and closely parallels the superficial temporal artery as it crosses the root of the zygomatic arch. From a slightly elevated, oblique profile of the head and neck, its inferior course is traced toward the parotid region where it contributes to the retromandibular vein, with the mandibular ramus and lateral skull providing firm bony landmarks. Portions of the calvaria, zygomatic bone, cervical vertebrae, and upper thoracic spine remain visible to orient the vessel in anatomical position. Small venules in the scalp converge into the main trunk. Clear surface anatomy. This venous pathway matters in temporal scalp lacerations and during surgical or cosmetic work around the temple and preauricular area, where brisk bleeding can be misleading because the vein lies tethered in superficial tissues near the temporoparietal fascia. Its relationship to the parotid gland and retromandibular vein is also relevant in parotidectomy and in interpreting venous drainage patterns on CT angiography or venography, where superficial temporal vein enlargement may reflect altered intracranial or extracranial outflow. The paired arterial companion helps teach neurovascular “traveling together” in the lateral face. Ideal for head and neck anatomy teaching in medical and dental curricula, and for surgical atlases covering preauricular incisions, superficial temporal artery biopsy planning, or flap design based on the superficial temporal vessels.
