Arising within the superficial fascia of the temporal region, the superficial temporal vein courses superior to the zygomatic arch and fans across the temporal fascia toward the preauricular area, where it lies anterior to the external ear and lateral to the temporalis muscle. Inferiorly it descends within the parotid region, running superficial to the mandibular ramus and posterolateral to the masseter before joining the maxillary vein to form the retromandibular vein.
