Description
Running superior to the zygomatic arch within the temporal region, the superficial temporal vein collects venous drainage from the lateral scalp and forehead, then descends anterior to the auricle toward the parotid region. An anterior perspective places it lateral to the orbit and superficial to the temporal bone, with the mandible and maxilla framing the lower face and the nasal aperture and orbits defining midline bony landmarks. Companion vessels are suggested by the paired red and blue coding, so the superficial temporal artery is typically seen adjacent to the vein as both cross the root of the zygomatic process of the temporal bone. Small venules converge into the main trunk. Clear relationships. Palpation and procedural planning around the temple depend on understanding where this vein runs relative to the tragus, zygomatic arch, and lateral orbital rim, because it can be encountered during facelift dissection, temporoparietal fascia elevation, and superficial temporal artery biopsy (the vein often lies close enough to be injured during exposure). Venous enlargement along this course may accompany scalp lacerations, temporal hematoma, or vascular malformations, and the anterior view helps explain why bleeding can track into the loose areolar tissue of the scalp and present away from the primary injury. For clinicians correlating surface anatomy, this route also clarifies where venous outflow from the lateral scalp joins the retromandibular system within the parotid gland.
