Description
Anteriorly oriented, the globe is framed within the bony orbit, with the retinal vasculature visible through the ocular fundus as the inferior temporal retinal venule courses from the lower temporal quadrant toward the optic disc. Along its path, smaller peripheral venules converge into this larger vessel, running superficial to the inner retinal layers and accompanying an adjacent inferior temporal retinal arteriole of smaller caliber. Nasal to this arc, the optic nerve head region provides the central landmark where venous tributaries join the central retinal vein. Clean relationships. Inferior temporal venules sit in the drainage territory that clinicians scrutinize in diabetic retinopathy and branch retinal vein occlusion, where hemorrhages and cotton wool spots often cluster along the affected venous arcades. This anterior perspective also supports teaching the arteriovenous crossing points in the temporal retina, a common site of venous compression in hypertensive retinopathy, and it helps correlate ophthalmoscopic findings with the patient’s inferior visual field.
