Description
Arising from the central retinal artery at the optic disc, the inferior temporal retinal arteriole courses inferolaterally across the posterior pole toward the temporal retina, running anterior to the retinal pigment epithelium and choroid but posterior to the vitreous body. Along its arc, the vessel gives off smaller arteriolar branches that angle toward the inner retinal layers and track with companion venules in the inferotemporal quadrant. Superior to its origin lie the superior temporal arcades, while nasally the corresponding inferior nasal arteriole turns toward the optic disc and nasal retina. Orientation is anterior, from the viewer toward the fundus. For clinicians, the inferior temporal retinal arteriole is a practical landmark when you correlate fundus anatomy with functional defects in the visual field. Branch retinal artery occlusion often involves a single arcade vessel and produces a sectoral inner retinal whitening with a matching altitudinal or quadrantic field loss, and embolic plaques are commonly sought along the temporal arcades. This course also matters in proliferative diabetic retinopathy and retinal vein occlusion, where neovascularization and hemorrhage cluster around the arcades and near arteriovenous crossings. Small vessel location, big consequences.
