Description
Arising from the zygomatic bone near the zygomaticomaxillary region, the zygomaticus minor runs inferomedially across the cheek to blend with the musculature of the upper lip at the lateral aspect of the orbicularis oris. In this male head and neck study, it sits medial and slightly superior to the zygomaticus major, with the levator labii superioris positioned more medial along the side of the nose and the orbicularis oculi encircling the orbit superiorly. Superficial masticatory landmarks, including the masseter over the ramus of the mandible and the temporalis in the temporal fossa, frame the midface, while the sternocleidomastoid marks the anterolateral neck. Fiber direction is clear. That matters. Isolating the zygomaticus minor helps you teach the functional separation between upper lip elevation and oral commissure retraction, a distinction often blurred when learners lump “smile muscles” together. This muscle is a practical landmark in midface approaches and soft-tissue reconstruction, where preserving small mimetic slips reduces postoperative asymmetry and unwanted upper lip distortion; it also provides context for iatrogenic weakness after facial nerve (zygomatic and buccal branches) injury or edema.
