Seen from a posterior aspect, the paired cerebral hemispheres dominate the field, with the occipital lobes forming the superior contour and the longitudinal cerebral fissure dividing right and left in the midline. Sulci and gyri define the cortical convolutions, including the posterior portions of the superior, middle, and inferior occipital gyri lateral to the interhemispheric cleft, while the medial surface contour is suggested by the region of the calcarine sulcus and adjacent cuneus and lingual gyrus. Inferior to the cerebrum, the cerebellar hemispheres and vermis sit posterior to the brainstem, their tightly packed folia contrasting with the broader gyri of the cerebral cortex.
