Description
Running from the anterolateral iliac crest to the lateral aspect of the proximal tibia, the iliotibial tract (iliotibial band) appears as a dense, glistening longitudinal thickening of the fascia lata along the lateral thigh of an adult male. Superiorly, its fibers blend with the fascia overlying the tensor fasciae latae and receive a substantial contribution from the gluteus maximus, while the gluteus medius and gluteus minimus sit deeper and more posterior-lateral on the ilium, inserting on the greater trochanter of the femur. Distally, the tract passes superficial to the lateral femoral epicondyle and continues toward Gerdy’s tubercle on the anterolateral tibia, with the femur and knee joint providing bony reference points in the background. Anterior orientation matters for teaching because it clarifies how a lateral fascial structure can influence patellofemoral tracking and knee mechanics that clinicians often evaluate from the front.
