Description
Oriented to the anterior knee of an adult male, the inferolateral genicular nerve is traced as an articular branch coursing along the lateral aspect of the joint line, looping deep to the lateral patellar retinaculum and approaching the anterolateral capsule near the patella. Superiorly, the distal femur frames the suprapatellar region, while inferiorly the proximal tibia and adjacent fibular head define the lateral compartment landmarks. The nerve runs superficial to the bony cortex yet remains tethered to the capsuloretinacular tissues, placing it just lateral to the patellar margin and anterior to the fibular collateral ligament’s general plane. Cartilage is rendered over the femoral condyles and tibial plateau. A small nerve with outsized relevance. Articular innervation around the knee matters because pain generators are often capsular and retinacular rather than intraosseous, and the inferolateral genicular nerve is frequently implicated in anterolateral knee pain after arthroscopy or lateral retinacular procedures. This anterior perspective clarifies why needle trajectories for genicular nerve block or radiofrequency ablation can inadvertently intersect retinacular tissue and the superficial vascular plane, and why targeting near the lateral tibial plateau and femoral epicondylar region demands careful lateral-to-medial depth control. It also supports teaching the concept that genicular nerves do not respect a single compartment, instead wrapping along predictable osseoligamentous boundaries.
