Description
Along the posterior cervical spine, the intertransversarii cervicis appear as short segmental slips bridging adjacent transverse processes from C2 to C7, positioned deep to the superficial nuchal musculature and lateral to the spinous processes and laminae. From this posterior perspective the small bellies sit immediately medial to the transverse foramina, with the vertebral artery course implied anterolaterally, and they align superiorly toward the suboccipital region and inferiorly toward the upper thoracic transverse processes. Bilateral scapulae frame the field laterally, while the occipital bone and upper thoracic vertebrae provide superior and inferior bony context. These tiny intertransverse muscles rarely get attention until you teach or operate in the posterior neck, where distinguishing true muscle from ligamentous bands matters during layer-by-layer dissection and targeted posterior approaches. Their segmental orientation reinforces the concept of fine control of cervical lateral flexion and stabilization, and they sit close enough to the transverse processes that posterior injections, radiofrequency ablation planning, or posterior element exposure can benefit from knowing what should be present at each level. Small structures, tight real estate. Faculty can drop this plate into gross anatomy labs when students start confusing transversospinalis, levator scapulae, and the deep intersegmental muscles around the cervical articular pillars.
