Description
Along the lateral cervical spine, the intertransversarii cervicis appear as short, segmental muscle slips bridging adjacent transverse processes from the mid to lower cervical vertebrae, most often C3 through C7. Their fibers sit deep to the larger lateral neck musculature, occupying the gutter between the transverse processes and the articular pillars, with the slips oriented predominantly superior to inferior across each intervertebral level. A male skeletal framework is visible around them, including the cranium and mandible superiorly, the clavicle and scapula laterally, and the upper thoracic ribs and vertebrae inferiorly, providing bony context for the intertransverse spaces. Clinically, this view matters because the intertransversarii are closely tied to cervical segmental motion and are often discussed alongside the deep paraspinal stabilizers when teaching cervical biomechanics and neck pain patterns. Their proximity to the transverse processes and intervertebral foramina makes them relevant when correlating surface and deep anatomy during cervical facet interventions, medial branch blocks, or posterior approaches where layered dissection must respect small stabilizers and their fascial planes.
