Description
Arising from the lateral surface of the zygomatic process of the temporal bone and descending posteroinferiorly, the lateral temporomandibular ligament spans the outer aspect of the TMJ capsule to reach the posterolateral neck of the mandible near the lateral pole of the condylar process. Its fibers lie superficial to the joint capsule, crossing obliquely from superior and anterior to inferior and posterior, with the mandibular fossa and articular eminence positioned superiorly and the mandibular condyle inferiorly. Posterior to the joint, the external acoustic meatus and tympanic region of the temporal bone sit close to the capsule, while the zygomatic arch forms a lateral bony roof over the articulation. A clear lateral orientation. Functionally, this ligament is the main lateral checkrein of the temporomandibular joint, limiting excessive posterior translation and inferior distraction of the mandibular condyle, movements that would otherwise load the retrodiscal tissues and tympanosquamous region. That relationship matters in TMJ trauma and instability: a blow to the chin can drive the condyle posteriorly toward the external acoustic meatus, and the lateral ligament is one of the few stout restraints resisting that vector. For clinicians teaching jaw mechanics, the oblique fiber direction also explains why wide opening couples rotation with anterior translation onto the articular eminence rather than permitting a simple hinge motion. Use this lateral plate in head and neck anatomy courses when introducing the TMJ as a synovial articulation with a capsule reinforced by discrete ligaments, and in dental or OMFS teaching materials discussing dislocation reduction and mechanisms of post-traumatic malocclusion. It also fits radiology and physical therapy publications that correlate surface palpation of the zygomatic arch and condylar head with capsuloligamentous pain patterns.
