Description
Lateral head and neck anatomy is rendered with the temporomandibular joint as the focal articulation between the mandibular condyle and the mandibular fossa of the temporal bone, just anterior to the external acoustic meatus. The lateral temporomandibular ligament (temporomandibular ligament) spans inferiorly and posteriorly from the root of the zygomatic arch and articular tubercle to the posterolateral aspect of the mandibular neck, forming a taut band superficial to the joint capsule. Surrounding context includes the zygomatic bone, squamous temporal bone, parietal and frontal bones with cranial sutures, and the mandible with its ramus and angle. Clear landmarks. Functionally, this ligament is the main lateral reinforcement of the TMJ capsule and a mechanical checkrein against posterior and inferior translation of the mandibular condyle during wide opening and protrusion. That restraint matters in anterior disc displacement, recurrent subluxation, and traumatic dislocation, where altered condylar path and capsuloligamentous laxity change joint loading and can drive preauricular pain and clicking. Surgeons and dentists also track it as a palpable, surface oriented landmark when planning TMJ arthrocentesis or arthroscopy portals, since the ligament relates closely to the joint space and to the course of the auriculotemporal nerve posteriorly. Use this plate in dental anatomy and occlusion courses to teach capsular anatomy, condylar translation, and ligament based limits to mandibular motion, and in medical gross anatomy modules on the lateral skull base and cervical region. It also suits oral and maxillofacial surgery texts, TMJ disorder patient education, and radiology correlation for lateral MRI or CT discussions of the TMJ and adjacent ear structures.
