Description

Anterior abdominal surface anatomy is rendered on a standing Black adult woman, with the liver highlighted beneath the right costal margin and extending medially into the epigastrium. The right lobe occupies the right hypochondrium, while the smaller left lobe projects toward the left upper quadrant, separated functionally by the plane of the falciform ligament (not always externally visible in body-in-situ renders). Superiorly, the hepatic dome conforms to the undersurface of the diaphragm and sits deep to the lower ribs, and inferiorly the liver approaches the costal margin along the midclavicular line. Clinically, this body-in-situ perspective matters because it anchors hepatic anatomy to palpable and procedural landmarks rather than an isolated organ view. Hepatomegaly from congestive heart failure, fatty liver disease, or acute hepatitis can shift the inferior edge below the costal margin and change where you expect dullness to percussion in the right upper quadrant. Interventional access tracks, whether for percutaneous liver biopsy, transhepatic biliary drainage, or planning port sites for laparoscopic cholecystectomy, start with an accurate mental map of where the hepatic mass sits relative to ribs, diaphragm, and midline. Location first. Pathology follows. Use this asset in preclinical gross anatomy and surface anatomy teaching, in hepatology and gastroenterology slide decks explaining right upper quadrant examination, and in patient-facing or public health materials that need a realistic female figure with the hepatic organ clearly localized. It also suits surgical education pieces that introduce abdominal quadrant orientation before moving into segmental (Couinaud) liver anatomy. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
