Description
Running vertically along the lateral ramus of the mandible, the masseter forms a thick muscular wall from the zygomatic arch superiorly down toward the angle and lateral surface of the mandibular body inferiorly. Anterior to it, the buccinator and perioral facial musculature frame the cheek and oral commissure, while posteriorly the parotid region and the external ear provide surface landmarks. Superior and slightly anterior, the temporalis occupies the temporal fossa and converges toward the coronoid process, clarifying the relationship between the two major jaw elevators in lateral profile. For teaching mandibular biomechanics, a lateral view is the cleanest way to read the masseter’s line of pull and its role in closing the jaw at the temporomandibular joint. Bruxism-related masseter hypertrophy, myofascial pain, and temporomandibular disorders often localize tenderness and trigger points along the muscle belly near the mandibular angle, and this orientation matches how clinicians palpate it during an exam. It also supports procedural anatomy: botulinum toxin injection for masseteric hypertrophy is planned on the lateral face with attention to the anterior border of the masseter to avoid diffusion toward the risorius and zygomaticus complex.
