Description
Medial pterygoid plate of the sphenoid appears in posterior view as a thin, sickle-shaped lamina descending from the root of the pterygoid process. Its free posterior border forms the medial wall of the pterygoid fossa, with the broader lateral pterygoid plate positioned lateral to it and separated by the intervening pterygoid fossa. Inferiorly, the plate curves into the pterygoid hamulus, a hook-like projection that lies distal to the body of the sphenoid and marks the posterior aspect of the hard palate region when related to the palatine bone. Fine bony margins stand out. This region matters because fractures of the pterygoid plates are a defining feature of Le Fort midface fracture patterns, and a posterior perspective helps learners identify the plates as paired vertical buttresses rather than confusing them with the choanal margins or vomer. Surgeons also use the pterygoid hamulus as a landmark during evaluation of soft palate mechanics, since the tendon of tensor veli palatini turns around the hamulus; irritation or elongation here can be a source of focal palatal pain and dysphagia. Crisp surface shading makes the thinness of the medial plate and the curvature toward the hamulus easy to read against adjacent skull base contours.
