Beneath it, the submucosa forms a thicker connective tissue band carrying submucosal vessels and lymphatics, plus the submucosal (Meissner) nerve plexus. External to the submucosa, the muscularis externa separates into an inner circular layer and an outer longitudinal layer, with the myenteric (Auerbach) plexus positioned between them; the serosa (or adventitia where retroperitoneal) covers the outer surface.
