Description

Dorsal soft tissues of the foot and distal leg are rendered from a superior (dorsal) perspective, with superficial lymphatic vessels traced in green over the metatarsals and toward the cuneiform region. Fine collectors arise from the toes and dorsal digital territories, converge along the dorsal venous arch, then track proximally across the talocrural region toward anteromedial pathways that parallel the great saphenous vein and anterolateral pathways that follow the small saphenous vein. Proximal channels course superficial to the extensor tendons and retinacula, then continue into the lower leg toward the popliteal and superficial inguinal nodal basins. Skin texture and hair provide surface context. For teaching lymphatic drainage, a dorsal view clarifies why infections and edema of the toes and forefoot often declare themselves with streaking along predictable lines toward the medial leg. Clinically, these superficial collectors are the route for lymphangitis after interdigital tinea pedis, and they form the initial drainage for cutaneous malignancy on the dorsum of the foot before deeper pedal pathways and nodes are involved. The relationship to the dorsal venous arch also helps learners avoid conflating superficial lymphatics with veins on examination. Small vessels, big consequences.
