Description
Rendered in a lateral profile of an adult male head, neck, and upper thorax, the lymphatic vessels and nodal groups are traced over a semi-transparent skull, cervical spine, clavicle, and upper ribs. Superficial and deep cervical lymph nodes form longitudinal chains along the lateral neck, with clusters aligned near the angle of the mandible and along the anterior border of the sternocleidomastoid region, then continuing inferiorly toward the supraclavicular fossa. Fine collecting vessels interconnect these nodes and descend to the venous angle region, where the terminal lymphatic ducts join the internal jugular and subclavian venous junction. Clinically, this side-on arrangement matches how you think about stepwise spread of infection and metastatic disease from the oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, and thyroid into the deep cervical chain and then to the supraclavicular nodes. A key teaching point is the relationship of nodal levels to palpable landmarks and operative corridors, since selective neck dissection planning and sentinel node mapping depend on anticipating which stations lie anterior or posterior to the sternocleidomastoid and which sit low in the neck near the clavicle.
