Description
Running along the vertebral column, the intervertebral discs sit between adjacent vertebral bodies from the cervical spine through the lumbar levels, their bluish cartilage contrasting with the surrounding osseous vertebrae. Each disc is organized into an outer annulus fibrosus encircling a central nucleus pulposus, anchored superiorly and inferiorly to the vertebral endplates at the cranial and caudal margins of each vertebral body. Cervical and lumbar discs align with regions of lordosis, while thoracic discs follow the kyphotic arc, reinforcing the spine’s segmented S-shaped profile. Intervertebral spaces remain consistent in the midline, with lateral margins contouring to the vertebral body outlines. Disc morphology matters because the annulus and endplates are where many mechanical failures concentrate: annular fissures, endplate (Schmorl) nodes, and posterolateral herniation that can encroach on the spinal canal or intervertebral foramen. A posterior disc bulge at L4-L5 or L5-S1 correlates directly with common patterns of radiculopathy in adults, while cervical disc degeneration often presents with foraminal stenosis affecting the exiting nerve root. Small structures, big consequences. The emphasis on cartilaginous zones helps clarify why discs behave differently under compression, torsion, and flexion, and why degenerative disc disease is not synonymous with acute herniation.
